What appealed to you about appearing in a big superhero franchise movie and taking on an iconic character such as Gwen Stacy?
When I auditioned for it, I didn’t get the full script, I only got scenes between Gwen and Peter and I screen-tested with Andrew. I heard about Spider-Man and I didn’t think it was something I would want to be a part of. I just thought that probably isn’t right for me. Then I had the scenes and realized that this was a really interesting fantastic relationship between two people and that I was being really close-minded. I liked all the Spider-Man movies and I’ve liked so many superhero movies that I don’t know why I had that kind of mentality about it. Then I went in and auditioned with Andrew and started learning more about Gwen Stacy and her history and just fell in love with the character and with the fans, too. I started reading forums and getting involved more in the comic book universe and it just became something I really wanted to be a part of, just because of all those elements.

You went from playing a literary character in The Help who was in a much beloved book with its own kind of following, to a comic book character who’s iconic and has this rabid following. Was there a big difference for you between those characters and how they’re treated by their fans?
Well of course the characters themselves are incredible different and there seems to be a different fan base between Spider-Man fans and fans of The Help. There are conventions for Spider-Man fans and there aren’t for The Help fans, although I would love to see a convention of The Help fans. It could be like the big Lebowski Fest. But they’re two tonally different worlds to me even though they both had such a rabid following. There’s a difference just in terms of bringing the material to life. There are different incarnations of Gwen Stacy and of Peter Parker throughout comic book history, all these different storylines to pull from depending on what kind of script you’re going to patch together. With The Help, it was such a distinct story that kind of needed to be matched line for line in a way. It felt different just in terms of becoming part of it and the way the material was adapted. But I’m so excited to be part of a movie with a built-in fan base in that way. You go to Comic-Con and there’s so much passion in one room. Everybody’s so passionate about these characters and how they’ve affected their own loves. It’s a really cool thing as an actor to know that you’re part of something that’s so much bigger than you. You’re not creating it from the ground up, you’re trying to fill the shoes of someone that’s been around a lot longer than you. It’s really exciting. I love that aspect of it.

Why do you think the producers and writers went with Gwen instead of Mary Jane?
Well, Gwen’s story happened before Mary Jane’s, and I think that coming back to their roots, it was interesting to explore the woman who came before Mary Jane. I think she’s such a definitive part of Peter Parker’s relationship with Mary Jane ultimately, who is literally the polar opposite in personality of Gwen Stacy. I think just building that into Pter’s life and seeing that story from the very beginning was really interesting. And of course Gwen’s story is so beautiful and important to that story of Spider-Man that I think they wanted to come from that angle at this time.

Director Marc Webb’s first film was (500) Days of Summer, which is more of a bittersweet romance. What do you feel he brought to Spider-Man with that kind of backround?
I think that a huge part of what he brought to Spider-Man was the true core of the relationship, and how even though this is a boy that’s been bitten by a spider and given super powers, he is a very human teenage boy that just happens to be under these circumstances. He’s lost his uncle and he’s falling in love for the first time and he’s going through som incredibly human experiences while not quite being human himself anymore. And I think that Marc’s vision was just that it’s a very huge world that we’re operating in but the story itself is in a room between people. There are elements of Spider-Man all throughout that; big sequences and scenes with action and violence, but I think Marc really cared so much about the heart of the story and the humanity in his relationships.

When the comic was first created back in the 1960s, one of the things that separated it from other comics was the kind of soap opera elements of it. Do you think the heart of this movie is a romance story?
I think that a big part of the heart of this story is romance, but there’s also the story of an orphan boy who’s searching for his father and searching for his place in the world. I think that’s a big element in this movie from the very beginning, him feeling instantly like an outcast because he was left as a chile. He still was put into a different set of arms [with Uncle Ben and Aunt May] and he’s cognizant of that and you can see that in the movie. But it’s not like it happened when he couldn’t remember it. I think that’s a pretty major element, too…coming to terms with who you are and what you’re responsible for, even if people walked away from you.

What was it like working with Andrew Garfield?
I think his deep love and appreciation for Spider-Man were pretty apparent throughout the entire process of the movie. I think it’s really awesome to have such a huge Spider-Man fan play Spider-Man because he was so protective of all the elements of Peter Parker’s nature. It’s a really nice thing to watch someone who’s read all the comics and dreamt of being this person since he was four years old bring that dream to fruition. I think he’s such an excellent actor and such a great person that I feel so pround of him and what he did in the movie.

What did you think when he stepped up to the mic at Comic-Con and revealed his own Spider-Man story and his history with the character?
I think we all were biting our nails for that moment because we knew like maybe an hour before that he was going to do that because they had to bring him out early through a different way. It was really last minute, and he was like, “This is what I’m doing, by the way,” and it was so heartfelt, so honest, and couldn’t be more indacitive of the way he played the character. It was just all heart and I thought it was fantastic. I loved it.

What did you think of the costume that he wore on that day?
I think it was from Target. It was pretty great. Yeah, he could have walked around Comic-Con in it.

A number of actors and directors have come to Comic-Con in disguise so they can walk the floor. Do you have any ambitions to do that or have you done that?
I would love to do that. I was going to be a Stormtrooper last year, but we had to leave right after the panel to fly back to L.A. so I didn’t get to do it, but hopefully next year. Well, now I can’t be a Stormtrooper, but I’ll pick something else.

What was the one thing that surprised you most about making this film?
It was Marc’s approach…at the end of the day you’re sitting on the floor looking into they eyes of another actor and it’s just like real life. I feel the heart if really remained, and it didn’t ever feel bigger than us in that way. It fely like a human story. I like that. That surprised me because I thought it was going to feel so daunting every day, with wires and harnesses and green screens and it was a pleasant surprise.

So how do feel about the possibility of having your own action figure?
Is that going to happen?! If any kids get an action figure of me and act like I did with action figures then it’s going to be a highly inappropriate situation.

That’s the next question: would you keep it in the package or would you take it out?
I would take it out. Always take it out!

At Comic-Con you wore a button that read “What would Laura do,” in reference to producer Laura Ziskin, who passed away last summer. What kind of influence was she on this film and you in particular?
Oh God, a huge one. I can only speak for myself but she was a huge influence on me. I named my dog after her husband [screenwriter Alvin Sargent]. She sat with me and would talk to me about how she met Alvin, and the feelings that she had when she met him and how she felt they mirrored certain elements of Gwen and Peter. So I couldn’t play Gwen without thinking of Laura. And when she was on set, we were lucky. Every day that I was tehre she was there at some point. But that love story she was so in love with – Gwen and Peter’s love story – and was so protective of, she had such beautiful ideas for it. I was very affected just in terms of playing that character by Laura.

Just 24 hours prior to its worldwide debut online, Sony Pictures unveiled a sneak peek of its superhero tentpole The Amazing Spider-Man during an international fan event held in select theaters around the globe. In addition to the trailer preview — the studio and the film’s stars, who were on hand to answer questions during a live simulcast — debuted footage from the movie.

The highly-anticipated footage played in 13 cities, including Mexico City, Berlin, Moscow and Seoul. Director Marc Webb joined the Los Angeles crowd, Emma Stone and producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach showed up in Rio de Janeiro, Rhys Ifans in London and Andrew Garfield in New York. Hundreds of fans showed up at the AMC Century City hours before the presentation with the line stretching from the upper to lower levels and around the block. A second presentation was even added to aid in satiating the demand.

The event cannily saw Sony Pictures’ unveling of the new Spidey trailer quickly hijack Monday’s “post-Super Bowl best commercials” debate by blowing away attendees with the preview’s slick footage.

The 3D trailer more than delivers and ditto for the extended scenes which were shown in 2D. Though some of the material had already been screened for fans during last year’s Comic-Con Convention in San Diego, there were a couple of shots still in the animatic stage. The brand new footage reveals some of Dr. Curtis Connors’ evolution into classic Spider-Man villain the Lizard, as well Peter Parker’s hand in creating the amphibious freak.

One of the other standout scenes played was a “Spidey vs. the NYPD manhunt,” led by Captain Stacy (Denis Leary), father of love interest Gwen Stacy (Stone). During one of the scene’s pivotal moments, Captain Stacy even unmasks our hero (But we won’t tell you what happens after).

What is most amazing about the footage is despite how “big” it plays, the scenes still manage to remain deeply intimate and personal. Sami Raimi’s Spidey scenes actually pale in comparison with a faker, quainter feel. In the preview, the relationships between Parker and his family, Gwen Stacy, her father Captain Stacy as well as the Connors, all show multi-facets of the teen character. Garfield’s version of Peter Parker not only plays the bullied teen-turned-powerful superhero side of the character, but also the side of an orphan striking emotional chords over a desire to connect to his missing father.

In between viewings of the trailer and sizzle reel, Webb said one of the main focuses in the new Spidey movie was to explore Parker’s life in the context of being an orphan. “I wanted to treat Peter Parker in a more naturalistic way,” he said.

Speaking from Rio, Stone explained how her character Mary Jane would differ from that of Kirsten Dunst’s portrayal in the Raimi movies. “Gwen is the yin to Mary Jane’s yang,” she said. “Gwen is falling in love with Peter Parker and Mary Jane falls in love with Spider-Man, which I think is different.”

Sony nailed the casting of Parker/Spidey with Andrew Garfield, who came off both nervous and extremely humble, “I can’t believe I’m here,” he told the excited geek crowd.

The character “belongs to everyone in this room,” Garfield said from the New York event. “It doesn’t belong to me. I really mean it. The more of these events I go to the more I realize…It’s overwhelming to be representing this symbol. ‘Cuz that’s all I am. I’m the guy in the suit. It could be anyone in the suit. It happen to be me this time, before that it was Tobey [Maguire] and next time hopefully it will be a half hispanic-half african-merican actor.”

Garfield’s last sentiments — a nod to the debut of last year’s Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series, featuring a mixed-raced character Mile Morales — elicited cheers and laughter from Rio, London, New York and LA.

As part of its promotional ramp-up for The Amazing Spider-Man, Sony hosted events with the film’s principals in different cities around the world today, all simultaneously and linked up via some kind of video technology that I will never, ever understand. Stars Andrew Garfield (New York City), Emma Stone (Rio de Janeiro), Rhys Ifans (London) and director Marc Webb (Los Angeles) presented a new and much improved trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man (as well as a “sizzle reel” that you will not see which revealed even more footage) and answered some questions about the film. Among Garfield’s remarks was one that delighted the assembled fans and press in attendance: he said that he hopes the next Spider-Man will be “a half-Hispanic, half-African American actor,” an obvious reference to Ultimate Spider-Man star Miles Morales.

Some SPOILERS follow.

Answering a canned question from a fan on the Internet, Webb said he was eager to take on the Spider-Man reboot because of the elements Spidey that have yet to be film. He listed the “Gwen Stacy saga” as a crucial component of his work on the franchise as well as the presence of the Lizard (“One of my all-time favorite villains”) and the opportunity to depict “the emotional consequences of being an orphan.” Indeed, the footage we saw dealt explicitly with Peter Parker’s late father, and how his life has impacted the young hero. Webb also said that The Amazing Spider-Man presents a “more realistic, more naturalistic Peter Parker,” which we can confirm is absolutely true based on the material presented.

“How is Gwen Stacy different from Mary Jane Watson?” was the question put to Emma Stone, who described the characters as “polar opposites.” For one thing, Gwen is a Valedictorian and comes from an affluent, close-knit family, Stone explained, while Mary Jane came from humble circumstances and did not enjoy a good relationship with her father. Also, Stone said, “Gwen falls in love with Peter Parker, while I think Mary Jane fell in love with Spider-Man.”

Rhys Ifans said that “unlike other comic book villains,” the baddies of Spider-Man’s world are “human, real and flawed.” He explained that Dr. Connors aka the Lizard was a friend of Peter’s late father, which makes for a “complex and emotional relationship” with Peter/Spider-Man.

Asked why he took the part of Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield deadpanned, “Because I’m not an idiot.” The actor said “Everyone wants to be Spider-Man. Spider-Man belongs to everybody, not just to me. I’m just the guy in the suit.” Garfield said he’s just one piece of a lineage that includes former Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire and, “Hopefully, next time it will be a half-Hispanic, half-African American actor,” a remark which drew applause from the Miles Morales fans assembled around the world.

As for the footage, we were presented with the new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man that will be made available online a little later, as well as a sizzle reel which assembled some additional moments from the film. Skeptical viewers of the initial trailer will likely be won over by quite a lot of the material in the new version, which presents a Spider-Man with far more attitude, humor and charm than we’ve seen in other films. In one memorable sequence, we see Spidey berate a would-be car thief for thinking he was a cop despite the fact that he’s wearing a skintight red and blue costume. In the sizzle reel, Spider-Man executes what can only be described as epic spider trolling on this hapless crook. I suspect that this scene will be thought of as revelatory for Spidey fans, as the moment where the comic book hero, who’s famous for his endearingly obnoxious sense of humor, finally came to life in cinema.

The footage contained some action bits and web-swinging that is more or less inline with what we’ve come to expect from Spider-Man films, but perhaps with a more realistic aesthetic than that employed by Sam Rami in his earlier trilogy. There’s certainly loads of super-science stuff going on in this film, and it seems that fans will be treated to an in-depth sequence that documents the development of Spider-Man’s web-shooters.

Most impressive was a scene in which a distinctly Romita-esque Emma Stone joins Andrew Garfield for some authentically awkward “will-you-go-out-with-me” exchanges in the halls of their high school. It was utterly natural and extremely cute. Uncle Ben is present for some of it, and violates Bro Code in a manner most egregious and one that I suspect must play some role in his eventual death (which may or may not occur in this film, I don’t really know).

We’re still five whole months away from the feverishly anticipated The Amazing Spider-Man reboot starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans (in 3D!). But that didn’t stop Sony from getting the Peter Parker party started early today; the studio gathered fans in four cities and three countries to bring out its stars, show fresh footage and even answer a few questions ahead—way ahead—of its July 3 release.

Here are five things we learned:

1. Emma Stone isn’t Kirsten Dunst, got it? If you’re looking for Stone’s blond Gwen Stacy character to be anything like Dunst’s Mary Jane, forget it. “I keep saying Gwen is the yin to Mary Jane’s yang,” she told fans via live linkup in Rio De Janiero. “They’re polar opposites in every way…Gwen falls in love with Peter Parker, Mary Jane falls in love with Spider-Man.”

2. Think Spider-Man meets The Dark Knight: Look for darker, more sarcastic humor, a more antagonistic relationship with law enforcement, and more of a self-made hero. And in this version, Parker gets some of his web-slinging studliness from his own talent for invention—as it was in the original comic books. “We wanted to treat Peter Parker in a more realistic way,” director Mark Webb told fans from Los Angeles.

3. Or think Spider-Man meets The Dark Knight meets…Star Wars? No, the Lizard is not Spidey’s Dad (we hope), but there are a lot of daddy issues wrapped around the hero-villain dynamic. Dr. Curt Connors, aka the Lizard, the villain at the center of the tale, holds the key to Peter Parker’s questions about a mysterious past. “With Dr. Curt Connors, what makes him a more emotional presence in Peter’s life is that he had a very close relationship to Peter’s father,” said Rhys Ifans, who plays the villain and who was speaking to fans from London. “That makes the connection a very complex and emotional one.”

4. The new Spider-Man is totally scared. “I’m terrified right now,” Andrew Garfield admitted while speaking to fans from New York. “It’s so overwhelming to be representing this symbol … but it’s a reverent terror.” As for why he took the role, knowing the great responsibility that comes with it, he quipped, “I’m not an idiot.”

5. The next Spider-Man will be… Garfield imagines Spider-Man evolving in a very interesting way in the future. “Hopefully next time he’ll be a half-Hispanic, half African-American actor,” he told fans.

A new official synopsis for the film ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ has been released – the movie will be released on July 3, 2012!

One of the world’s most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in The Amazing Spider-Man. Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theaters everywhere in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance — leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Emma Stone has ranked #6 on the AskMen.com annual poll of top 99 women for 2012!

We can’t blame Jim Carrey for his creepy proclamations of love for Emma Stone. With her disarming smile and raspy voice, the fiery redhead inspires that kind of devotion in a lot of men. In Crazy, Stupid, Love, Stone played a girl so completely perfect that she drove a career playboy to give up the game. The role really wasn’t much of a stretch. When she’s not causing men twice her age to record video testimonials or players to rethink their life plan, the star of the Oscar-nominated The Help is impressing us with her comedic timing and laid-back attitude. So, yeah, Jim, we like her, too.

The Help actress Emma Stone has revealed how her character Gwen Stacy and Andrew Garfield’s character Peter Parker aka Spider-Man share a nice first kiss, although she does admit that it is a lot different from the upside down kiss by Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire in the previous Spider-Man movie. Emma would not say whether or not it was as iconic though, as she feels that is something for the audience to decide.

Stone explained, “You don’t wanna know. You wanna watch the movie and find out. And it would be weird if we were like, ‘Yes, there’s something iconic coming up.’ You’ve got to decide if it’s iconic or not.” She added, “There is a nice first kiss. I will say that. And it’s different than the upside-down one. And we liked it.”

It has been suggested that Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield are currently dating off screen, although neither of them have yet to confirm or deny the rumour. As well as Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, The Amazing Spider-Man also stars Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The Amazing Spider-Man is set to be released on July 3, 2012.

It’s only been five years since we last saw Marvel’s Spider-Man swinging through the skies of New York City. Come July, the iconic super hero will be rebooted with Andrew Garfield in the title role and Emma Stone playing his love interest, Gwen Stacy – so how does this friendly neighborhood crime fighter movie differ from the Tobey Maguire/Kirsten Dunst version?

“The Amazing Spider-Man” co-stars (who are rumored to be dating in real life) appeared at a press conference in Japan on Wednesday, where they were asked about the characters’ first onscreen kiss.

“You don’t want to know! You want to watch the movie and find out,” Emma told reporters, when asked how their first lip lock would compare to Tobey and Kirsten’s iconic upside down rain-soaked smooch.

“Plus, it would be weird if we were like, ‘There’s something iconic coming up!’ You’ve got to decide if it’s iconic or not,” she explained. “But there is a nice first kiss and it’s different than the upside down one. And we liked it.”

The first three big screen Spidey movies relied heavily on CGI effects when it came to the hero’s acrobatics and sweeping action scenes, but it appears Andrew put his own life on the line, filming many of the stunts the old fashioned way.

“As you can see, a lot of the stunts are practical and grounded in reality,” he explained. “That was something that Marc [Webb], the director, really wanted to make sure happened in this movie to set it apart from previous ones,” he explained. “I would exhaust myself every day and get into near-death experiences every hour on the hour.”

Adding, “I collaborated with [the stunt team] not only on the big stunt set-pieces, but also on what happens to Peter’s body when he gets bitten… The idea that he has spider DNA running in his system. What that will do to his sense of space. What that will do to the sensitivity of his skin. To have an opportunity to play in that forum with creative and talented people was a real opportunity and gift.”

“The Amazing Spider-Man” swings into theaters on July 3.

Last night after Emma Stone won the Best Actress accolade at the People’s Choice Awards, she shocked the press by simply saying, “It sucked.”
In the press room after the ceremony, of course she was laughing, and then the The Amazing Spiderman actress added, “Like a really not-eloquent concert.”

What did seem eloquent, however, was working on the Spidey movie. “It’s been really incredible. It’s been different than anything I’ve had the opportunity to do before,” she explained. “We actually wrapped back in May.”

Although the movie isn’t set for release until this July, she thinks the brains behind it are already working on another one. “They green-lit it,” she added.

Switching gears, we wonder what beau and Spiderman costar Andrew Garfield thought of her dress? Perhaps in the category of TMI, she revealed, “You wouldn’t know it, but I am completely naked under my outfit. It’s Gucci and, you know, it’s green and black and white.”

How fitting to have a Stone on a Rock: Emma Stone will make a cameo in an upcoming episode of 30 Rock, along with Andy Samberg and Nick Cannon, series creator-star Tina Fey tells EW.

In the Jan. 26 episode of the NBC comedy, Jenna (Jane Krakowski) stars in “a movie from the producers of Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve called Martin Luther King Day,” says Fey. “I want to lay claim to that bit before anyone gets it. It’s a movie that has everyone in the world in it.” That includes the aforementioned actors from The Help, Saturday Night Live, and Up All Night, who will be seen in a trailer for the faux film.

30 Rock, which kicks off its sixth season Thursday at 8 p.m., will also feature such guest stars as James Marsden, Mary Steenburgen, Will Arnett, Denise Richards, Kelsey Grammer, and Kristen Schaal.

In a deal worth $1 million upfront, GK Films has acquired Little White Corvette, the Michael Diliberti script that has Emma Stone attached to star. Stone, who most recently completed The Amazing Spider-Man and who’s got some Oscar buzz for her performance in The Help, had an open slot that had several studios buzzing. Shooting on this one will begin in late summer and Scott Aversano will produce with GK’s Graham King and Tim Headington. Diliberti wrote the story with David Branson Smith. Stone and Diliberti will be exec producers.

Stone had been interested in the script since last summer. It’s a two-hander about a nerdy guy and his wild older sister who travel to Miami to try and sell a million-dollar stash of ’70s cocaine they found in the trunk of their late father’s car. It’s the third recent sale for Diliberti, who sold the pitch The Big Sayonara to Fox as a potential directing vehicle for John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, and an untitled pitch that Warner Bros bought for Todd Phillips to produce. Both Stone and Diliberti are repped by WME; Stone’s managed by Anonymous Content and Diliberti by New School Media.

It’s been an Emma Stone kind of year.

Stone, 22, appeared in three feature films in 2011 and has an even bigger gig on the horizon for 2012. But what’s been refreshing about Stone’s career boom is where we don’t see her: peering out from mug shots on tabloid covers or denying the latest round of rumors that she is or is not (insert gossipy condition of your choice here).

When Stone made news off-screen, it was for things like saying that she doesn’t do nude scenes because her father would kill her. It’s a refreshing attitude, one that serves her on-screen and off.

The Scottsdale native and Valley Youth Theatre alum had a scene-stealing small-but-hilarious role in “Friends With Benefits,” heated things up with man-of-the-moment Ryan Gosling in “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and proved she knew her way around a drama in “The Help,” one of the most successful movies of the year. Each performance helped further a career that began with good notices in “Superbad” and includes a Golden Globe nomination for 2010′s “Easy A.”

(She was great during the television broadcast of the awards show early this year as well.)

Next year Stone stars in her biggest role yet — as Gwen Stacy in “The Amazing Spider-Man.” It’s the kind of job that, box-office returns willing, should lead to a franchise.

Along with the upcoming “Movie 43″ and “Gangster Squad” also on tap, there’s no reason to think 2012 won’t be a big year for Stone as well. Movie careers are tricky things, of course, and there’s no future in trying to predict them.

Better to enjoy what Stone has accomplished in 2011, then, the year she solidified her status as one of the biggest breakout stars the Valley has seen, with a lot of optimism for the future.

Emma Stone starred as Eugenia ‘Skeeter’ Phelan in the movie and she did a phenomenal job. This is definitely one of my favorite movies she’s ever done. In this Q & A with Stone, she talks about her character, friendship, her career and more.

A long, hot summer filming The Help in Greenwood, Mississippi bonded the cast and crew into formidable unit, says Emma Stone, and forged life long friendships.

In The Help, the actress plays Eugenia ‘Skeeter’ Phelan, a young woman who returns home from college to embark on a career as a journalist, in the early 1960s just as the Civil Rights Movement was becoming a force for change.

When Skeeter decides to write a book about the lives of the African American women who work as domestics, with the assistance of two maids, Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis) and Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer), it exposes the racially segregated society in her hometown.

“We were in a small town and we didn’t know anybody else, we just had each other,” says Stone. “It was very exciting to shoot on location because you don’t just go home at night the way you would if you are in New York or Los Angeles.

“So it really was a complete bonding experience and we would hang out with each other and have block parties, it was really incredible. We’ve become great friends and I know that we’ll all be friends for life. We’re a great team.

“We all get along so well, thank God, because we all had to spend a lot of time with each other. But it’s been a great experience and so much fun, too.”

Based on Kathryn Stockett’s acclaimed, best selling novel of the same name, and directed by Tate Taylor, The Help is the story of how a group of black women find a voice and with that voice begin to break down barriers of race and prejudice and plant the seeds for change.

“I think The Help touches on so many themes,” says Stone. “I think Kathryn set out to write characters, not a message, but the thing that is so wonderful about this story is that it’s about being human, it’s not like she was trying to get across some social message. So there are themes of love, friendship, acceptance, the relationship between a mother and daughter, the relationship between caregiver and a child, first love, self-acceptance, overcoming adversity. It’s the story of the underdog, the story of bravery in the face of being jailed or being killed. And it’s a story about racial inequality, gender inequality – there are so many messages and themes. Courage is probably the biggest theme of all.”

Before filming started Stone researched the time period and read up on the controversial Jim Crow Laws – the bill that enshrined racial segregation into the statute in numerous states.

“Tate gave us an incredible documentary series, The Eyes on The Prize, which is six one-hour programmes about the civil rights movement in that period,” she explains.

“And it was really informative, incredible to watch and staggering to hear the stories of violence and inequality for no good reason – just hate and ignorance. It was fascinating and horrifying. And I read books on the Jim Crow Laws. Jim Crow was a man who made these laws in Mississippi that decreed that everybody had to use separate bathrooms, separate cinemas, water fountains and lunch counters – he created this legal separation. In our story, Skeeter goes to the library and learns all about this and she learns that any white and black human beings co-mingling can be grounds for being thrown into jail.”

For Stone, filming The Help was a life changing experience she’ll never forget.

“I’d never experienced material like this,” she says. “It was a growing experience for me and the entire project changed my life not just as an actor, but as a human being.”

Ms Stone is now firmly established as one of the brightest young talents working in Hollywood today with acclaimed performances in films including Superbad, Zombieland, Easy A, Friends With Benefits and Crazy, Stupid, Love.

She plays Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man, which is due to be released next year (2012) and recently completed Gangster Squad, starring with Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling for director Ruben Fleischer.

When it was announced earlier this summer that Emma Stone would become Revlon’s latest brand ambassador, it made perfect sense. The 23 year-old actress, who starred in just about every major blockbuster this summer including “The Help” And “Crazy Stupid Love”, isn’t afraid of makeup. Or changing her hair color for that matter. She’s gone from red to blonde to red again more times than we can count, and she pretty much jumpstarted the hot pink lipstick phenomenon we now see on everyone, everywhere. We chatted with Stone to get her thoughts on beauty icons, self tanning disasters and an intense Diane Keaton obsession.

You’re a big champion of the pink lipstick trend. I’d even say a pioneer. What are your favorite shades?
I didn’t know I was a champion; I’m honored. A pioneer… like Annie Oakley! I never know the shade name so it would be hard to tell you my favorite, but I love fuchsias and really, really bright pinks that’s for sure.

Have you always preferred pinks over reds? When did that become your thing?
Recently, I’ve been going for more pinks than reds, I think. I love red lipstick, but I think it’s kind of more modern with the corals and the pinks. The variations on red have been fun to play with, and it’s something different every time.

Do you think your fair complexion makes it easier to wear such bold shades?
I’m grateful that something works well with my fair complexion because sometimes you tend to look like a thumb, you know, you’re just all one shade when you’re this pale, so it’s nice to have pops of color.

What does your off-duty makeup routine consist of?
When I’m just kind of hanging around, I always use grape seed oil. You know the kind you buy in the grocery store, but I use it on my face, instead of in recipes. I use that throughout the day because my skin is astronomically dry, like shockingly dry. So I use a lot of oil and then… Revlon Grow Luscious Mascara. I use that pretty much, like first thing in the morning, and then I feel pretty alright.

How did it feel to become the face of such a legendary brand like Revlon?
I remember the day that they kind of approached me and were wondering if I’d be interested in it, I was in my hotel and walked up to my room and into the bathroom. I was looking at my makeup counter and getting ready to go somewhere and I had the Colorstay foundation sitting near my sink, and I was like this is bizarre. Then I turned around, and there was like, a Revlon hair dryer. I mean this is what my mom always used, this is how I was introduced to makeup. It’s just always been my mom’s favorite brand, and then going back through the history with the Charlie girl and just how long it’s been around. It’s so iconic and it really is just kind of an incredible thing to be a part of.

Also a really, really fun element to working with Revlon, being a part of the whole Revlon family is that they let you try out all of these products. So you genuinely fall in love with some of them, and Grow Luscious [mascara] was the first one that I was kind of like, okay this one is not leaving me.

What past and present day actresses do you admire beauty wise?
Diane Keaton. Through time. That’s then and now… and I just think she’s so beautiful because she is so quintessentially Diane. I think that’s kind of amazing.

Have you met her?
No, I haven’t met her, but I talk about her so damn much that she’s probably scared of me. I talk about her literally everyday. She’s probably a little freaked out by me, so maybe it’s a better idea not to meet her because she’s probably going to have to get some sort of restraining order at this point. I’m kidding, I promise I am no threat.

Is there a decade that you find yourself drawn to when it comes to fashion and beauty?
I tend to go in 20 year increments, so 20s, 40s, 60s, NOT the 80s and then now… 80’s for whatever reason I immediately am like No! No! I don’t know what it is but all of that stuff, my brain just rejects it… I think the 80s are great, but for whatever reason 80s fashion just does not mix in my mind’s eye well. But the nice thing about now is that it seems like there’s a lot of people and a lot of designer clothing stores have pulled from elements of all of those eras, so you’re kind of mixing all of those eras together now a days which is really fun… and you don’t even have to wear corsets anymore, which is awesome.

What was your most embarrassing beauty moment?
There was a time where I could not stand the pale. I’m from Arizona, and everyone is very, very tan. It’s super sunny… since I couldn’t go in the sun because I don’t have any pigment in my skin (which I now really appreciate). But sometimes I still want to be warmed up because it’s built into my DNA to think tan is incredible. But I got a lot of spray tans, and before I discovered spray tans I got a lot of those tanning lotions and that is not a good look. I mean it wasn’t on me because I did not know how to apply it in a way that didn’t look like I had just rolled around in a bunch of dirt. So it was like a splotchy, streaky mess of a situation. I’m sure some people are able to do it in the right way, but that was always my biggest beauty mishap…the solid two years I spent spray tanning.

Lightning Round:
Favorite scent?
Probably Chance by Chanel. Yeah, I love Chance

Favorite band?
The Beatles. No brainer.

Favorite food?
Oh boy, oysters or maybe Brazilian food, in terms of cuisine.

Favorite movie?
“City Lights”

Favorite book?
“Franny and Zoe” by J.D. Salinger.

Favorite place in the world?
Home, but like, in my apartment, in my bed.
