A Trip to Zombieland: Emma Stone

Emma Stone is way too hot to be just 20 years old. There I said it. As hard as the may be to believe, she looks even more amazing in person than she did in Superbad, and as we learned when we talked to her, she exudes a similarly nerdy cool as her characters, which makes her far more approachable than most older actresses that are half as good-looking.

A couple hours into our visit, Stone showed up to shoot her scenes in the supermarket, and the visiting journalists found a corner of the makeshift cafeteria to talk to her, all of us sitting on the floor as workers took the remaining tables and chairs. Besides the locale, it was a strange interview, because the unit publicist decided to plop himself right down to Stone making both her and us nervous as he jumped in to tell her what we could or couldn’t talk about. We have kept some of his comments in the interview because they obviously had an impact on Ms. Stone’s responses.

Shock: Since we’re just coming into this and we’ve heard a little bit about your character, but can you talk a little bit about who you play in the film?

Stone: I play…can we say names? Wichita is my character’s name being that she is originally from Wichita and that’s how our characters go by, and she’s a woman, I think, on the road. [laughs] I don’t know how much I can and cannot say. I’m a little nervous.

Publicist: You shouldn’t be nervous.

Stone: I’ve never had one of these secret movies before.

Shock: Can we learn how you meet the other two characters?

Stone: Columbus and Tallahassee? No, right?

Publicist: Yes, you can. Basically, you’re looking to find transportation.

Stone: Yeah. Obviously, we’re on the run across the country from everyone who’s turned into flesh-eating zombies. We’re traveling along and we’re benefiting from some things that they can offer us. Can I say what kind of things?

Publicist: Sure.

Stone: Weapons, cars, ammunition.

Publicist: Basically the first 20 to 30 pages of the script are safe to talk about.

Stone: Cool.

Publicist: Maybe I’m wrong.

Stone: I have no idea.

Publicist: The first 20 or 30 pages should be okay.

Stone: Well, not really. There are so many surprising twists and turns in this script.

Paper Man Review

So, here is the first review I’ve seen for Paper Man [One of Emma's latest flicks].

http://www.daemonsmovies.com/2009/06/30/paper-man-movie-review-la-film-fest/

PAPER MAN (5 out of 5 stars)

Paper Man was the opening movie at the 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival, and all I can say is that it was a great choice.

Paper Man tells the story of Richard Dunn (Jeff Daniels) a failed author whose wife, Claire (Lisa Kudrow), a successful surgeon, rents a house in New Jersey in order to help him get over his writer’s block. Along for the ride is Richard’s imaginary friend, Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds), who has been with him since 2nd grade.
Unfortunately, Richard can’t seem to get anything written and the fact that his first novel was a bust doesn’t help either. During one of his outings to town, he meets Abby (Emma Stone) a Long Island teen who feels as lonely as he does. A friendship between the two begins a la “Lost in Translation” which helps both of them deal with their lives and unresolved issues.

Paper Man very much has a typical independent feel to it, which I love. And while the basic storyline is not that original, the elements surrounding it definitely bring it to a new, original level. I thought the whole Captain Excellent element was brilliant and putting Ryan Reynolds in the role in a Superman-like costume and platinum hair just makes it that much more brilliant. Oh and did I mention Captain Excellent also has some sort of slogan, it’s pretty fun.

Unfortunately, during the movie we realize that even Captain Excellent’s slogan can’t seem to inspire Richard for his new book. Even worse, Richard starts going against Captain Excellent’s advice.
I really loved the dynamic between the two characters, because I think the directors/writers (Kieran and Michele Mulroney) were able to make us feel like this relationship had been going on for at least 40 years. And we also see it evolve throughout the movie, as Richard tries to find himself.

Abby is the other person in Richard’s life that challenges him and I have to say that I just loved Emma Stone’s performance in Paper Man. I think that compared to other movies that I have seen her in, she added a new vulnerable layer to her character that was needed and I loved watching every scene she was in.

In the movie, Abby also has her own baggage, and her friendship with Richard will also help her move on to new and better things.

Paper Man is definitely a character study and not everyone will get it or enjoy it, but I really loved it. The actors brought these characters to life and instead of making them one note throughout the whole movie, they gave them dimensions, which allows you to connect to them.

The story also surprised me in the direction that it took. There was one twist that I didn’t see coming, which I won’t spoil for you, but when that happened, it gave Paper Man a new outlook on what had happened before and it made it that much more brilliant.

Overall, Paper Man has a great story, great acting, and great directing. So if you enjoy independent movies, unlikely friendships between two people, and imaginary superheroes in tights, then you might be in for a treat.

TeenHollywood.com Interview

Hello! First, I just wanted to quickly introduce myself. I’m Jessica and I’ll be helping Jennifer [owner] out around here to make sure you get the latest info on Emma as it’s happening!

Here is the interview Emma did with Teenhollywood.com while filming Easy A!

You can find the rest of the interview [With Penn Badgley and Amanda Bynes] HERE!

——

You know those classes everybody wants to take because it’s a snap to get an “A”? Well, movie-making isn’t quite as easy for the young, hot cast of next year’s high school comedy Easy A. TeenHollywood was in Ojai, California a few days ago on set at a real high school where 20-somethings Emma Stone (Superbad, The Rocker), Penn Badgley (“Gossip Girl”) and Amanda Bynes (Hairspray) were going back to high school playing students at a pep rally and working hard, over and over again to get their fun scenes just right.

The film is loosely based on the Hawthorne classic “The Scarlet Letter” but before you run the other way picturing pilgrim types, the only real similarity is the timeless truth that rumors can make or break a person’s reputation. ‘Nuff said. We are honoring the film studio’s wishes that we hold back on all the very, very cool stuff we saw until closer to the film’s release date next year. But, we’ll say that it was very funny and showed that these actors have some talents we’ve not yet seen them explore!

We got to grab some chairs behind the director’s monitors, watch the action both live and on the screen and, in between set-ups, grab some time with Amanda, Penn and Emma! We got some info not related to the film that we can share right now. Check it out!

TeenHollywood: Emma, what was your high school experience like?

Emma: I was only in high school for a couple of months. I went to an all girls Catholic high school and then I decided to leave and move to LA to do this [acting] which I can’t believe here I am now. That was 5 1/2 years ago.

TeenHollywood: So can you relate to teen girls with the pressures they’re faced with whether you’re in high school or not?

Stone: Absolutely. I think that’s what I like about [my character] so much. She rises above it and realizes this is just temporary and this is high school and everyone will forget this and everyone will move on. What can she do but have as much fun to get through it as she can? It kinda bites her in the a**, but it’s also really funny.

TeenHollywood: Your part is pretty central to this film. This movie is on your shoulders basically. Is this the first time?

Emma: Yeah. It’s been wild. It’s been crazy. It feel different than I thought it might. I never thought in a million years that that would ever be the case. It’s wild. This is my third movie in a row so I’ve been working for eight months. It’s kinda natural. It’s just like ‘oh another set’ and you’re working and you kinda forget that you’re here all day every day. I don’t really think about it like that. I just think about getting my job done. We’ll see how it turns out.

We’re going to say that Emma is doing an amazing job in a scene that will showcase talents we’ve not seen her display as yet. We think it will all “turn out” fine! Check back in a few months for more details on Easy A!
